Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 1864) was one of Americas most famous writers. Best known for the classic book The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne also wrote many other well known books and short stories including The House of the Seven Gables and Young Goodman Brown. Hawthornes writing centers around moral issues and the psychology of humans and is dark in nature. Much of this is due to Hawthornes shame of being related to one of the Salem Witch Trial judges. John Hathorne was Nathaniels great grandfather and the latter added the w to his name in order to hide that relation. This version of Rappaccinis Daughter includes a table of contents.

It's really just a short story. I rated the characters as developed considering the length of the story and how they can be read. I was able to develop them further for my grad paper so I'm glad they weren't complex. I used this book as the basis for my paper arguing man's relationship with nature and how man's knowledge of nature is so he can assert his dominance over it. Comparable to a Frankenstein story but in creation of nature opposed to man. Would be a good complimentary piece.

Rappaccinis Daughter edition by Nathaniel Hawthorne Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Most of us have limited exposure to Hawthorne's work- The Scarlet Letter or perhaps The House of Seven Gables while in high school. I do remember seeking out other books back then, but I missed this gem. Within the first few minutes of listening, I was completely taken in by the way Hawthorne layered the story; Giovanni, the impressionable youth; Beatrice, the alluring and deadly ingenue; Dr. Rappaccini, as subtly evil as any serial killer. I knew early on that Giovanni was doomed, but how? Was Beatrice really so clueless? I almost felt like I was listening to an Edgar Allan Poe tale. And all of this accomplished in a very short period of listening time. The skillful storytelling is why I loved this book.
I listen to audio books an average of two hours a day, while commuting. A bad reader can ruin a book for you, a good reader makes you forget they are "there", skillfully guiding you to "see" the story. I have heard Steven Jay Cohen read before and he does a great job with Rappaccini's Daughter. In fact I am going to listen to it again this week!
Rappaccini's Daughter is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in the third-person point of view of Giovanni Guasconti, a medical student in medieval Padua. The story centers around Giacomo Rappaccini, a medical researcher who grows a garden of poisonous plants. He rears his daughter, Beatrice to tend the plants, and she becomes resistant to the poisons, but in the process she herself becomes poisonous to others. Guasconti falls in love with Beatrice watching her daily outside his apartment window. He enters the garden and meets with Beatrice a number of times. The climax is when Giovanni brings a powerful antidote to Beatrice so that they can be together, but the antidote kills Beatrice rather than getting rid of her poisonous nature.

I listened to the Audible version of this story narrated by Steven Jay Cohen. Cohen's portrayal of the different characters was very engaging. I’d listen to another one of his narrations any time.

Listening to this story, I can't help but wonder if Hawthorne was a student of Shakespeare. The story has Gothic overtones and is reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet.
An old standard, well told. Classic.
I had to read this short story for my advanced placement English class. I was presently surprised when I enjoyed reading the book. Nathaniel Hawthorne' s genius shines brightly through this wonderful literary work.
Hawthorne developes plot and character wonderfully in this short story.
It was a bit difficult to understand as the author sets up the plot, but a very easy read thereafter.
Can't even remember which person it was narrated in. Very tiresome, sudden ending. Might have been good in it's day, but, now...?
