What happened to Mary Lincoln and her sons after Abraham Lincoln's murder? A beautiful, elegant, and straightforward account of Mary's life after that devastating Spring day in 1865. Mary's travels and her infamous insanity trial are discussed. Find out how Mary's relationships with family and friends progressed for the next 17 years of her life. This book also delves into details of Robert’s law career and family life in Chicago.

The Lincoln Family after 1865 eBook Rebecca Koncel

Short, fact filled and excellent overview of the rather unhappy circumstances that befell the Lincoln family after his assassination. A rather evenhanded view, although one feels that Mary Lincoln truly had bad karma what with betrayal by several friends, Tad's death, and that ridiculous sanity trial. Shocking that in all states in 1875 all Robert would have to do is go to a judge and have her committed on his word alone.

This was the normal way to rid oneself of wives and other inconvenient female relatives although this book doesn't go into those details, I found it very enlightening when I read elsewhere the reasons given for asylum incarceration from old records.

But because the Lincolns were in Illinois, Robert had to go to trial for the commitment. Reading about how he did it truly lowers him in my estimation. I will probably have to read more now that this book spiked my interest. A good background.

The Lincoln Family after 1865 eBook Rebecca Koncel Reviews

This biograghy was very enjoyable as well enlightening. How sad that this former first lady who was on top of the world during her husband's presidency had fallen deeply after his assassination. She endured the death of yet another son, social alienation, financial worries as well as the shocking betrayal from her only surviving son that led her to be declared insane and admitted into an insane asylum. How tortured those later years must have been for her . It read like a mini-soap opera!
This book is a big disappointment. Rather than delve deeply into the subject matter, it reads like a brief summary of the events that occurred. I know
from other publications on the subject, there is much more to the story than is presented here. Also, there are typographical errors.
I think it would be appropriate for young readers who may not wish to read a lengthy account.
An easy read, this overview of Abraham Lincoln's family from the time of his death in 1865 to the death of his last direct descendant in 1985 is informative and interesting even if it lacks any character development. It simply traces the historic events of Mary, his wife, and his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in linear fashion, outlining some of their activities and achievements with major emphasis on the tension and behavioral dysfunction between Mary and her only surviving son. Robert. It's simplistic format makes it easily readable by anyone in middle or junior high school through interested adults looking for a cursory summary of the Lincoln family's post-presidential years.
"The Lincoln Family after 1865", by Rebecca Koncel, a very interesting short book about the life of the Lincoln family after the death of President Lincoln. A very short and precise book about Mary Lincoln, Tab Lincoln, and Robert Lincoln. It provides insight into the torture of Mary Lincoln and her search for a life without the President and later with the death of Tad Lincoln at the age of eighteen. It brings to light her quest for a life of peace. July 15, 1882 she went into a coma and died. Robert Lincoln became a well known lawyer and had many jobs in the Federal government.

Although reportial in tone and sparse in its explanations, this little book still provides worthwhile information for anyone who wondered whatever happened to President Lincoln's family after his death. Sources are included.
This book shows Mary Lincoln in a much different light than books about Abraham Lincoln.
Usually depicted as a highly emotional person, on the verge of losing her sanity. Mary comes across as a very wise lady who knew what she wanted and how to get it.
Mary shows no fear when confronted with life's troubles while she and Tad enjoy their life together.
Mary finds that being the widow of Abe to be more of liability than an asset. Mary accepts just being an ordinary person and finds it much easier than being a presidents widow.
A short book, which can fill an afternoon or evening with the way women were really treated back then.
It was sad to read about Mary Todd Linicoln's life after her husband died, but it was good to know it wasn't as one-dimensional as it is usually protrayed. The fact that she lived in Europe for years showed that she was self-sufficent and capable of raising her youngest son along. The death of Tad at 18 or 19 was tragic. I don't know how one woman survived such sorry. She nursed three sons for weeks with terrible illness (easily curable with modern medicines) just to have each die in the end. And then the oldest son betrayed her in such an underhanded way.
I would have liked to know more about Mrs. Lincoln and her daughter-in-law's relationship. I have to wonder if Robert's wife took a great dislike to Mrs. Lincoln (and perhaps vice-versa) and that was why Robert basically abandoned her. Even if that were the case, it wouldn't lessen Robert's responsibility.
